Transition to the Future: Polygon Shifts from MATIC to POL Token

Polygon Labs, the powerhouse behind the prominent Ethereum scaling solution, is poised to take a significant leap into its future with a critical migration happening this Wednesday. The network will transition from its longstanding MATIC token to the new POL token, marking a pivotal shift as outlined in their Polygon 2.0 roadmap.

Understanding the MATIC to POL Migration

The transition will see MATIC phased out in favor of POL, which will assume the role of the native gas and staking token on Polygon’s main proof-of-stake chain. This change was detailed in a July blog post by Polygon, setting the stage for a broader evolution of the network.

The Rationale Behind the Shift to POL

Polygon’s shift to POL isn’t just a rebranding but a strategic move to enhance the network’s utility and performance. The transition is integral to Polygon’s evolution into a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) system. This system will host a network of interoperable application-specific blockchains, a core component of the Polygon 2.0 architecture.

The new POL token will play a crucial role in securing this aggregated network, known as the “AggLayer.” This layer will aggregate zero-knowledge proofs from all connected chains, ensuring secure and nearly instantaneous atomic cross-chain transactions.

What MATIC Holders Need to Know

For MATIC holders, the migration process will be mostly seamless:

  • On the Polygon PoS Chain: MATIC holders do not need to take any action; their tokens will automatically convert to POL.
  • On the Ethereum Network: MATIC holders can migrate their tokens to POL via the Polygon Portal Interface.
  • On the Polygon zkEVM and Centralized Exchanges: Some actions, like bridging tokens to Ethereum, may be necessary. A migration contract has been deployed to facilitate this for advanced users.
  • For Hardware Wallet Users: Those holding MATIC as ERC-20 tokens in hardware wallets may need to manually convert their tokens to POL, though detailed instructions are forthcoming.

No Immediate Deadline, but Future Changes Possible

Currently, there is no set deadline for converting MATIC to POL on Ethereum and Polygon zkEVM platforms. However, Polygon has noted that the community might set a deadline in the future.

This strategic migration not only marks a new chapter for Polygon but also reinforces its commitment to expanding its technological infrastructure and utility in the blockchain space.
